Tom Gottsleben

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, educated at the San Francisco Art Institute, Japan, and an Indian ashram, Tom Gottsleben moved to the Hudson River Valley in 1982. His work, as a sculptor and painter, creates for the viewer an experience of the harmony and beauty inherent in nature's patterns and in the union of what appear to be opposites: linear and curved, light and dark, form and void, and many others. Gottsleben's stone and crystal sculptures are the engagingly accessible result of his intellectual, poetic, and metaphysical explorations. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Neuberger Museum of Art (Purchase, NY), Art Omi International (Ghent, NY), and The Museum at Bethel Woods (Bethel, NY); and in group shows at the annual Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood (Stockbridge, MA) and the New York Botanical Garden (Bronx, NY). His work is in numerous private collections and is represented by the Elena Zang Gallery, in Woodstock, NY.

Tom passed away on January 15, 2019, at the age of 68. He had recently completed Rainbow Portal, a monumental work of 12 continuous rising and falling archways of stone and colored crystal glass that form a circle with a large crystal at its center. The sculpture is 31.75 feet in diameter and the arches are 9.5 feet high. By day, the sculpture sparkles in the sunshine, casting colorful reflections and projections. At night, illuminated by artificial light, it is otherworldly. Tom lived a life of truth, beauty and peace; gratitude, joy, and boundless love. He mentored many in their commitment to a spiritual path, and encouraged all of us to “Keep on glowing, growing, and going beyond.”
